Bruxism: What It Does to Your Teeth Over Time

Bruxism — grinding or clenching the teeth, usually during sleep — affects a significant portion of adults, many of whom are entirely unaware of it. The forces involved are far greater than normal chewing. Over months and years, those forces flatten the chewing surfaces of teeth, wear through enamel, cause sensitivity, crack fillings, and in some cases, fracture teeth.

Enamel doesn't grow back. Once it's worn away, it's gone. That's why the timing of intervention matters. That's why the timing of an examination matters — the earlier the wear pattern is identified, the more clearly Dr. Maddipati can explain what is happening and what the options look like.

Jaw tension and headaches are the most common symptoms patients notice first — especially morning headaches or facial muscle soreness. Some patients are told by a partner. Others only discover it when their dentist points out flattened or chipped teeth at a routine checkup.

Stress and sleep quality both influence grinding. Dr. Maddipati discusses the full picture — not just the teeth — when planning care for grinding patients.

Signs You May Be Grinding

  • Morning jaw soreness, tightness, or fatigue
  • Dull headaches around the temples on waking
  • Teeth that look flatter or shorter than they used to
  • Notched or chipped areas at the gum line (enamel erosion pattern)
  • A partner reporting grinding sounds at night
  • Increased tooth sensitivity without another obvious cause

Grinding Damage Is Cumulative. An Early Examination Gives You the Full Picture.

Dr. Maddipati discusses all relevant options at the appointment — what each involves and what the considerations are for your specific situation.

Maddipati
DDS, MPH

She learned public health before she learned dentistry.

Dr. Maddipati checks for signs of bruxism at every routine exam — looking at enamel wear patterns, checking jaw muscle tenderness, and noting any cracked or chipped restorations — often catching it before patients are aware of any symptoms. She often identifies wear patterns before patients are aware of any symptoms — giving them a clear picture before the situation progresses.

That's why Medicaid is accepted here — genuinely, for every patient. That's why the staff speaks Spanish. That's why Dr. Maddipati personally sees every patient, every visit. No rotating associates.

Common Questions

General information only. When in doubt about severity, seek care promptly.
The most reliable way is a clinical examination — Dr. Maddipati can see enamel wear patterns that are characteristic of bruxism, check jaw muscle tenderness, and identify related symptoms. If you have morning jaw soreness, flattened teeth, or unexplained headaches, it's worth coming in. You don't need to hear yourself grinding to have the problem.
Dr. Maddipati discusses all relevant factors at your appointment — what is driving the grinding, what options are available, and what each involves. Nothing is recommended before the examination.
Coverage varies by plan. We verify your specific plan before your appointment and let you know what applies before any treatment begins.
Enamel doesn't regenerate. Continued grinding gradually wears it away, exposing the softer dentine underneath, which wears much faster. This leads to progressive sensitivity, a change in bite and tooth appearance, fractured fillings, and eventually cracked teeth — which require more involved treatment.
