Many patients avoid deep cleanings because they've heard they're painful and expensive, or they worry their dentist is overselling treatment they don't really need.

Dr. Maddipati shows you the X-rays and pocket measurements that indicate why you need deep cleaning, explains exactly what areas require treatment, and discusses payment options before any work begins.

Periodontal disease (gum disease) causes bacteria to accumulate along the gum line, leading to inflammation, gum recession, bone loss, infection, and ultimately tooth loss. Deep cleanings eliminate this buildup.

What Is Scaling and Root Planing?

A periodontal deep cleaning — also called scaling and root planing — is a non-surgical procedure that goes below the gumline to remove plaque, tartar, and bacteria from the surfaces of tooth roots.

The Process

  • Scaling – Removes plaque and tartar above and below the gumline
  • Root Planing – Smooths root surfaces so gums can reattach and bacteria can't adhere
  • Antibiotic Treatment – Antibiotics may be placed in pockets to eliminate infection

Signs You May Need a Deep Cleaning

  • Red, swollen, or bleeding gums
  • Persistent bad breath
  • Receding gums or loose teeth
  • Deep periodontal pockets on exam

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, Medicaid typically covers deep cleanings when medically necessary. We verify your benefits beforehand and can break treatment into sections if needed. We also accept CareCredit and Sunbit for any portions not covered.
We numb the area first, then clean below the gum line in sections (usually 2-4 visits). Each session takes 45-60 minutes. You may have some soreness for a day or two, but most patients feel relief as their gums heal.
