A cavity is one of the most common dental concerns — and when caught early, it's one of the most straightforward to treat. Dr. Maddipati uses tooth-colored composite resin fillings that restore both the function and appearance of your tooth, and she takes the time to show you the cavity on your X-ray and explain your options before any work begins.

Is this an emergency? If you are experiencing severe tooth pain, visible swelling, or pain that is waking you at night, please call us right away — this may indicate the cavity has progressed and requires prompt evaluation. For a cavity identified at a recent exam or mild occasional sensitivity, scheduling at your convenience is appropriate.
Tooth decay (dental caries) is caused by bacteria in the mouth that produce acids as they feed on sugars from food and drinks. Over time, these acids gradually dissolve the mineral structure of tooth enamel — the hard outer layer of your tooth. This process of mineral loss is called demineralization, and when it progresses past the point where the tooth can naturally repair itself, a cavity forms.
Cavities are extremely common — they can develop at any age, in children and adults alike, and in patients who brush and floss regularly. This is not a reflection of poor hygiene; it reflects the complex interplay of diet, saliva, bacteria, and tooth structure. The encouraging news is that a cavity caught early is among the simplest dental problems to treat, often in a single comfortable appointment.
A white spot may appear on the enamel surface — the earliest visible sign that acid is weakening the tooth. At this stage, the damage may be reversible with fluoride and improved oral hygiene. No drilling required.
The decay has broken through the outer enamel. A filling is the appropriate treatment. Because enamel has no nerve endings, this stage is often painless — but that doesn't mean it should wait.
Decay has reached the softer dentin layer beneath the enamel. Dentin contains tiny tubules connected to the nerve, which is why teeth at this stage often become sensitive to temperature or sweets. A filling is still typically appropriate.
Decay has reached the inner pulp — the nerves and blood vessels inside the tooth. This stage often causes significant pain and may require root canal treatment to address the infection before a crown can be placed.
Only a clinical examination with X-rays can determine the stage of decay in your tooth. Dr. Maddipati reviews her findings with you — including the X-ray image — and explains what she recommends and why before any treatment begins.
Many cavities — particularly in their early stages — cause no noticeable symptoms. This is one of the most important reasons for regular dental exams: catching decay before it causes discomfort gives you the most options and the simplest path to treatment.
At Mi Smile Family Dental, we place tooth-colored composite resin fillings — a material that matches the natural shade of your teeth and bonds directly to the tooth structure. This approach preserves more of your healthy tooth compared to older metal restorations, and because the material blends with your tooth, the result is virtually invisible.
Composite resin contains no mercury. It bonds chemically to the tooth, which means less healthy tooth structure needs to be removed. The tooth-colored shade blends naturally for front and back teeth alike. At your appointment, Dr. Maddipati selects the shade that most closely matches your natural tooth color.
Dr. Maddipati reviews your X-ray with you, shows you the cavity, and explains the extent of the decay and what treatment involves. She answers any questions before anything else happens.
Local anesthetic is applied to the area. Most patients are surprised by how comfortable the appointment is once the tooth is numb. Dr. Maddipati gives the anesthetic time to work fully before proceeding.
The decayed portion of the tooth is carefully removed. Only the affected tooth structure is removed — Dr. Maddipati preserves as much healthy tooth as possible.
The composite resin is applied in layers, with each layer hardened using a curing light. The material is then shaped and polished to match the natural contour of your tooth and your bite.
Dr. Maddipati checks that your bite feels natural and comfortable. Any minor adjustments are made, and the surface is polished to a smooth finish that is easy to keep clean.
The steps above describe a typical composite filling appointment. The time required and specific steps may vary depending on the size and location of the cavity, the condition of the tooth, and other individual factors. Dr. Maddipati discusses the process with you before beginning. You decide at your own pace.
Cavities are among the most common chronic conditions in children, and primary (baby) teeth matter for more than just chewing. They hold space for permanent teeth, support speech development, and affect your child's overall comfort and confidence. When a primary tooth has a cavity that needs treatment, addressing it appropriately helps protect the developing permanent tooth underneath.
Texas Medicaid (STAR) and CHIP cover dental fillings for enrolled children. Dr. Maddipati has extensive experience helping children feel comfortable and at ease during dental appointments — she explains each step in terms children understand, moves at the child's pace, and never rushes. We verify your child's Medicaid or CHIP benefits before the appointment.
For children (and some adults) whose back molars are decay-prone, dental sealants — a thin protective coating applied to the chewing surface — can help prevent cavities from forming in the deep grooves of those teeth. Dr. Maddipati can assess whether sealants are appropriate for your child and discuss this option with you. Learn more about sealants →

Call 832-779-5522No rotating associates. When you visit Mi Smile Family Dental for a filling — or any other care — you see Dr. Soujanya Maddipati personally. She takes the time to review your X-rays with you and make sure you feel informed and comfortable before treatment begins.
Dr. Maddipati knows that many patients feel embarrassed about cavities or worry they'll be lectured about their oral hygiene. That's not the experience here. Cavities are a biological process — they happen to people who brush diligently and people who don't. Her job is to assess what's there and help you understand your options clearly and without judgment.
When she finds a cavity, she shows you the X-ray, explains what stage it's at, and gives you an honest assessment of how urgent it is — whether it needs treatment today or can reasonably wait a few months. She tells you the cost before treatment begins, including what your insurance will cover.
She founded Mi Smile Family Dental to serve the North Houston community — including patients on Medicaid and CHIP who deserve the same quality of care as anyone. Medicaid is accepted genuinely, and all treatment costs are explained before work begins.
