Is this an emergency? Gum disease is typically a gradual condition, not a dental emergency. However, if you have a visible dental abscess, swelling in your jaw or neck, or significant pain, please call us at 832-779-5522 promptly. If swelling is spreading to your neck, you are having difficulty breathing or swallowing, or you have a high fever, go to the nearest emergency room immediately — these can be signs of a spreading infection requiring urgent medical care.

Understanding Gum Disease

What Gum Disease Is — and Why It Is So Common

Gum disease (periodontal disease) is an infection of the tissues that support your teeth — the gums, the periodontal ligament, and the jawbone. It begins with bacteria in the sticky film that forms on teeth (plaque). When plaque is not removed consistently with brushing and flossing, it hardens into tartar (calculus), which cannot be removed at home and requires professional cleaning. The bacteria in these deposits trigger an inflammatory response in the gum tissue, which is the beginning of gum disease.

Gum disease is extremely common — the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) recognizes it as one of the most prevalent chronic infections in adults. It does not reflect poor character or carelessness. Many factors influence gum disease susceptibility, including genetics, systemic health conditions like diabetes, certain medications, smoking, and hormonal changes. Dr. Maddipati evaluates your gum health without judgment and focuses entirely on what can be done to improve it from where you are now.

Two Main Stages of Gum Disease

Gingivitis (Early Stage)

Gingivitis is inflammation limited to the gum tissue itself. The gums may appear redder than normal, feel swollen, or bleed during brushing or flossing. At this stage, the underlying bone and ligament are not yet affected. Importantly, gingivitis is reversible — with a professional cleaning and improved home care, the gum tissue can return to a healthy state. This is the best stage at which to address gum disease.

Periodontitis (Advanced Stage)

When the infection progresses beyond the gum tissue and begins to affect the bone and ligament that hold teeth in place, it is called periodontitis. At this stage, the support structure of the teeth is involved. Periodontitis is not fully reversible, but it is very manageable. With appropriate professional treatment and consistent home care, its progression can be controlled, and teeth can be maintained well for many years. Dr. Maddipati explains what she finds in your specific situation and what is realistically achievable.

Only a clinical examination — which includes measuring the depth of the spaces (pockets) between each tooth and the surrounding gum tissue — can determine the stage and extent of gum disease. Dr. Maddipati performs this measurement at every comprehensive exam and explains the results to you in plain language.

Signs to Recognize

Common Signs That Your Gums May Need Attention

Gum disease often progresses without obvious pain, which means many people are not aware they have it until it has advanced. Recognizing the early signs and scheduling an evaluation gives you the most options for effective management.

Signs to Watch For

  • Gums that bleed when brushing or flossing
  • Gums that appear red, swollen, or puffy
  • Persistent bad breath not explained by food or drink
  • Gums that seem to have pulled back from the teeth
  • Sensitivity along the gumline
  • Teeth that feel less stable or have shifted position
  • A bad taste in the mouth that does not resolve

Gum Health and Your Overall Health

Research has identified associations between gum disease and systemic conditions including cardiovascular disease and diabetes. The relationship appears to be bidirectional — systemic inflammation from gum infection may contribute to overall health challenges, and conditions like diabetes can make gum disease harder to manage.

Dr. Maddipati holds both a DDS and a Master of Public Health — she brings that broader health perspective to her evaluation of your gum health as part of your overall wellbeing, not just your smile.

Treatment Options

How Gum Disease Is Treated at Mi Smile Family Dental

The appropriate treatment for gum disease depends entirely on the stage and extent of the condition in your specific situation. Dr. Maddipati explains her clinical findings and discusses the most appropriate approach before any treatment begins. Below are the main options available at our Airline Drive office.

1

Evaluation & Clinical Measurement

Dr. Maddipati measures the pocket depth around every tooth using a small probe and reviews X-rays to assess bone levels. She explains your gum health status and her clinical findings in plain language before recommending anything. For early gingivitis, a professional cleaning and improved home care guidance may be all that is needed.

2

Professional Cleaning (for Gingivitis)

When gum disease is caught at the gingivitis stage, a thorough professional cleaning above and just below the gumline — combined with effective home care — can allow the gum tissue to return to health. Dr. Maddipati or our hygienist provides specific guidance on the home care techniques most helpful for your situation.

3

Periodontal Deep Cleaning (for Periodontitis)

When measurements indicate that the infection has progressed to involve the bone and deeper tissues, a periodontal deep cleaning (scaling and root planing) is typically the first line of treatment. This procedure removes bacterial deposits from below the gumline under local anesthesia, allowing the tissue to heal. Learn more about deep cleaning →

4

Periodontal Maintenance

After gum disease treatment, regular professional maintenance visits are essential to monitor the tissue response and keep bacterial levels controlled. The interval between maintenance visits appropriate for your situation is determined by how your gum tissue responds to treatment and your home care habits. Dr. Maddipati discusses a maintenance schedule with you after treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions About Gum Disease

General educational information only. For a personal evaluation of your gum health, schedule a visit with Dr. Maddipati.

Gum disease (also called periodontal disease) is an infection of the structures that support the teeth — the gums, the ligaments, and the bone. It begins when bacteria in plaque and tartar are not removed consistently and cause the gums to become inflamed. The early stage, gingivitis, affects only the gum tissue and is reversible. When the infection progresses to involve the bone and deeper structures, it is called periodontitis, which requires more involved treatment.
Common signs include gums that bleed when you brush or floss, gums that appear redder or more swollen than usual, persistent bad breath, gums that seem to have pulled away from the teeth, sensitivity near the gumline, or teeth that feel less stable than before. Many people have gum disease without obvious symptoms, which is one reason regular examinations are important. Dr. Maddipati evaluates your gum health at every visit using a clinical measurement called probing.
Gingivitis — the earliest stage, affecting only the gum tissue — is reversible with professional cleaning and improved home care. More advanced gum disease (periodontitis), where bone and deeper structures are involved, is not fully reversible, but it is manageable. With appropriate treatment and consistent maintenance, the progression can be slowed and the teeth supported effectively for many years. Dr. Maddipati discusses what stage she observes and what is realistic for your specific situation.
A deep cleaning — also called scaling and root planing — is a non-surgical procedure that cleans below the gumline to remove tartar and bacterial deposits from the tooth roots. It is typically performed in sections, with the area numbed for comfort. After deep cleaning, the gum tissue has an opportunity to heal and reattach to the cleaned root surfaces. For more detailed information, visit our periodontal deep cleaning page.
Texas Medicaid covers periodontal deep cleaning when clinically indicated for eligible patients. We verify your specific benefits before scheduling any treatment and explain all costs upfront. Call us with your Medicaid information and we confirm your coverage before your appointment.
Research has identified associations between gum disease and several systemic conditions, including cardiovascular disease and diabetes. The relationship appears to be bidirectional — gum disease may influence systemic inflammation, and conditions like diabetes may make gum disease harder to manage. This is one reason Dr. Maddipati — who holds a Master of Public Health in addition to her DDS — takes gum health seriously as part of your whole-body health picture, not just your oral health.
Gum disease can recur if bacteria are allowed to accumulate again. This is why consistent home care and regular professional maintenance visits are so important after treatment. The frequency of maintenance cleanings appropriate for your situation depends on the severity of your gum disease and how well the tissue responds to treatment. Dr. Maddipati discusses a maintenance schedule with you after treatment.
Thorough brushing along the gumline twice daily, flossing every day (which disrupts bacterial colonies between teeth and under the gumline), and following up as recommended for professional cleanings are the foundation of gum disease prevention and management. If you notice any of the warning signs mentioned above, scheduling an evaluation promptly gives you the most options.
Children can develop gingivitis — gum inflammation — particularly during puberty when hormonal changes can make gum tissue more reactive to bacteria. True periodontitis is less common in children but does occur. Dr. Maddipati evaluates gum health in pediatric patients at every visit and discusses home care habits appropriate for your child's age.
Periodontal deep cleaning is performed with local anesthesia so the area is fully numbed during the procedure. Some soreness and sensitivity afterward is common and typically resolves within a few days. Dr. Maddipati provides specific post-treatment care instructions at your appointment.
