Medicare Advantage Dentist in North Houston

Original Medicare doesn't cover most routine dental care.¹ Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans often do — in 2026, approximately 98% of individual MA plans offer some dental benefit.² Here's how to use yours at Mi Smile, and how to handle services beyond your plan's allowance.

Original Medicare vs. Medicare Advantage

Two different things — important distinction for dental coverage:

Original Medicare (Parts A & B)

Generally does not cover routine dental care.¹ It may cover very limited dental services if they're part of a covered medical procedure (e.g., jaw reconstruction after trauma). Cleanings, fillings, crowns, dentures — not covered under original Medicare.

Medicare Advantage (Part C)

Private insurers offer bundled plans that include Parts A, B, and usually D (prescriptions), plus supplemental benefits. In 2026, approximately 98% of individual MA plans include some dental coverage.² Levels and networks vary substantially.

How MA Dental Benefits Typically Work

Most Medicare Advantage dental benefits follow one of two structures:

Preventive-only coverage

Cleanings, exams, and X-rays covered at no cost (usually 1–2 times per year). Other services (fillings, crowns) not covered under the plan's dental benefit.

Comprehensive coverage with annual allowance

Preventive covered, plus basic and major services. Most come with an annual dollar allowance — commonly in the $1,500–$3,000 range in 2026.² Once exhausted, balance is your responsibility.

Some plans use coinsurance (e.g., 50% on major services) instead of or in addition to an allowance.

Variation is substantial plan-to-plan. That's why we verify your specific MA plan before your visit.

In-Network vs. Out-of-Network for MA Dental

Medicare Advantage dental networks are often run by third-party administrators (DentaQuest, Delta Dental, or others acting for the MA carrier). Being in-network with a PPO plan doesn't automatically mean in-network on an MA plan from the same carrier — they're separate networks.

When you call, we check your specific MA dental network. If we're out-of-network, some HMO-style MA plans may limit coverage; PPO-style MA plans usually still pay at a lower rate. We explain either way before your visit.

How We Handle Your Medicare Advantage Visit

1

Call 832-779-5522 with your MA card

We contact your plan's dental administrator, confirm network status, remaining allowance, covered services, and any prior-auth requirements. No charge.

2

Written pre-treatment estimate

For any treatment beyond preventive, we give you a written estimate showing what your plan is likely to pay and your out-of-pocket portion before anything starts.

3

Plan around your annual allowance

If you have an MA dental dollar allowance, we help sequence treatment to make the most of it — e.g., completing some now and spacing out into next plan year if appropriate.

4

CareCredit / Sunbit beyond the allowance

For treatment costs above your allowance or outside your plan's coverage, CareCredit and Sunbit financing can split the balance into monthly payments, subject to lender approval.

Questions Worth Asking Your MA Plan

If you want to confirm coverage yourself (or during Annual Enrollment Period when comparing plans), ask:

  • What's my annual dental allowance?
  • Does my plan cover preventive, basic, and major dental services?
  • Are there waiting periods?
  • Who administers dental (DentaQuest, Delta Dental, etc.) and where can I find in-network dentists?
  • Does my plan require prior authorization for crowns, root canals, or major services?
  • If I go out-of-network, how does coverage change?

Frequently Asked Questions

General information only. When in doubt about the severity of your situation, err on the side of caution and call us or go to the ER.

Many MA plans are accepted. Networks are administered separately from standard PPO networks — call 832-779-5522 with your card and we verify your specific MA plan's dental network status before your visit at no charge.
Generally no. Original Medicare (Parts A and B) does not cover most routine dental care.¹ Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans often do, as a supplemental benefit.
Varies by plan. In 2026, most MA plans offer some dental — annual allowances commonly in the $1,500–$3,000 range.² Some plans are preventive-only. We verify your specific plan's coverage and remaining allowance before your visit.
You're responsible for the balance. Options: (1) complete needed treatment now and finance the balance with CareCredit or Sunbit, or (2) phase remaining non-urgent treatment into next plan year when your allowance resets.
Some MA plans impose waiting periods (commonly 6–12 months) before covering major services like crowns or dentures. Preventive is usually immediate. We check waiting periods during verification.
For most PPO-style MA plans, no. Some HMO-style MA plans require coordination with your primary care physician for certain services. We ask when we verify.
Medicare Annual Enrollment Period runs October 15–December 7 each year; changes take effect January 1. There's also a Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period January 1–March 31 for limited plan changes. Medicare.gov has the official plan finder.
