Dental Sealants for Kids – North Houston — Protecting Teeth Before Cavities Start
Dental sealants are one of the most comfortable and effective tools we have for preventing cavities in the grooves of back teeth — no drilling, no needles, no discomfort. Dr. Maddipati applies sealants for children and adults at our North Houston office on Airline Drive, and Medicaid and CHIP cover this preventive treatment for eligible children. — serving Greenspoint (77060), Aldine (77037 · 77038), Hidden Valley (77088) and North Houston.
Is this an emergency? Sealants are a routine preventive treatment — not an emergency procedure. If your child or you are experiencing tooth pain, a toothache, or visible swelling, please call us at 832-779-5522 so we can evaluate that separately. For any severe swelling with fever or difficulty swallowing, go to the nearest emergency room immediately. Pain or swelling should be assessed before preventive work is done.
What Are Dental Sealants
How Sealants Protect the Grooves of Back Teeth
The chewing surfaces of back teeth — the molars and premolars — are not flat. They have a landscape of ridges, grooves, and small pits designed for grinding food effectively. These grooves are valuable for function, but they also create spaces where food particles and bacteria accumulate. Even thorough brushing cannot always reach deep into the narrowest grooves.
A dental sealant is a thin, tooth-colored plastic coating that flows into these grooves and hardens, creating a smooth surface that is much easier to clean. By filling the deepest and narrowest grooves, sealants help prevent bacteria from settling in areas that are otherwise difficult to keep consistently clean — which is where many cavities begin in back teeth.
ADA & CDC Endorsement
The American Dental Association (ADA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) both recognize dental sealants as a safe and effective preventive measure for reducing cavities in the grooves of back teeth. Texas Medicaid and CHIP include sealants as a covered benefit for eligible children precisely because of this recognized clinical value.
Who Benefits from Sealants
Sealants for Children and Adults
Children & Adolescents
Sealants are most commonly applied shortly after the permanent back molars emerge. At this stage, the teeth are newly erupted and have not yet had the opportunity to accumulate the minerals that can naturally harden enamel over time. Applying sealants early, while the teeth are clean and healthy, provides protection during the years when cavity risk in back teeth is often highest.
Medicaid (STAR) and CHIP cover sealants for eligible children. We verify benefits before the appointment.
Adults
Adults can also benefit from sealants on teeth with very deep grooves that have remained cavity-free and have no large existing fillings. Sealants are not appropriate for every adult tooth, but Dr. Maddipati evaluates each tooth individually and discusses whether sealing specific teeth would be clinically beneficial in your situation. She explains her reasoning clearly before making any recommendation.
What to Expect
The Sealant Appointment — Comfortable, Quick, No Drilling
The sealant application is one of the most comfortable procedures in dentistry. No anesthesia is needed, and there is no drilling involved. Below is a general overview of what the appointment involves.
1
Tooth Cleaning & Evaluation
The tooth surfaces to be sealed are cleaned and examined. Dr. Maddipati confirms each tooth is free of decay and appropriate for sealing before proceeding. Only healthy, cavity-free surfaces receive sealants.
2
Drying & Conditioning
The tooth is dried and a mild conditioning solution is applied briefly to the chewing surface. This gently roughens the enamel at a microscopic level so the sealant material bonds well to the tooth. The solution is rinsed away and the tooth is dried again.
3
Sealant Application
The liquid sealant material is carefully painted into the grooves and pits of the chewing surface. The material flows into the narrow spaces that are otherwise hard to reach with a toothbrush.
4
Curing & Check
A curing light hardens the sealant material within seconds. Dr. Maddipati then checks the bite to ensure the sealant does not interfere with how the teeth come together, making any necessary adjustment. The tooth is now sealed and ready.
Sealants and Home Care Work Together
Sealants protect the chewing surfaces of back teeth — but they do not protect between teeth or at the gumline. Daily brushing and flossing remain important for complete oral health even after sealants are placed. Dr. Maddipati discusses what home care is most important for your child's specific situation at each visit.

Dental sealants are thin protective coatings applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth — the molars and premolars. These surfaces have deep grooves and pits where food and bacteria accumulate and where a toothbrush cannot always reach effectively. The sealant material flows into these grooves and hardens, creating a smooth, cleanable barrier over the vulnerable areas.
Sealants are most commonly applied to children's permanent back teeth shortly after they erupt, since this is when those teeth are most vulnerable. However, adults can also benefit from sealants on teeth that have deep grooves and no existing decay or large fillings. Dr. Maddipati evaluates whether sealants are appropriate for your specific teeth during your examination.
Texas Medicaid (STAR) and CHIP cover dental sealants for eligible children. The CDC endorses sealants as an effective preventive measure, and coverage reflects their recognized clinical benefit. We verify your child's specific Medicaid or CHIP benefits before the appointment. Coverage for adult sealants varies by plan — call us with your insurance information and we check before scheduling.
The sealant application is completely comfortable — no drilling, no needles, and no numbing required. The tooth is cleaned, dried, and a mild conditioning solution is applied briefly to help the sealant bond. The sealant material is then applied and cured with a special light. Most patients, including young children, find it easy and quick.
Sealants can provide protection for several years with proper care, though individual results vary. Dr. Maddipati checks the condition of existing sealants at each routine visit and can reapply sealant material if needed. Good brushing habits and avoiding chewing very hard items on the sealed teeth help maintain the sealants over time.
Sealants are a preventive measure — they are applied to healthy tooth surfaces to help prevent cavities from forming, not over existing decay. If a tooth already has a cavity, a filling is the appropriate treatment. Dr. Maddipati examines each tooth carefully before placing sealants to confirm the surface is healthy and appropriate for sealing.
No — sealants protect the chewing surfaces of back teeth, but they do not cover the sides of teeth or the spaces between teeth where flossing is essential. Good daily brushing and flossing habits remain important even after sealants are placed. Sealants work alongside good home care, not instead of it.
Yes. There is no significant recovery or restriction after sealant application. The material hardens quickly during the appointment with a curing light. Dr. Maddipati may recommend waiting until the next meal to allow the sealant to fully seat, and will give specific guidance at your child's appointment.
Sealants are typically considered when the permanent back teeth (first and second molars) fully emerge. Dr. Maddipati monitors your child's dental development at each visit and discusses when sealants may be appropriate based on your child's individual tooth development. There is no universal age — it varies by the child.
Absolutely — se habla español. Dr. Maddipati and our entire team explain the sealant process, answer all questions, and guide you and your child through the appointment completely in Spanish if preferred. Our office at 11834 Airline Drive has served the North Houston community in both languages since we opened.
