Many parents wonder if fluoride treatments are really necessary since their kids already use fluoride toothpaste, and some worry about the safety of extra fluoride exposure.
Dr. Maddipati explains exactly why your child might need professional fluoride based on their cavity history and diet, and shows you the difference between store-bought and professional strength fluoride. She'll tell you upfront if your insurance covers it and when it makes sense to skip it.
Fluoride treatments are a safe and effective method for preventing tooth decay. Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral that strengthens tooth enamel, making it more resistant to acid-producing bacteria.
How It Works
Professional fluoride treatments contain a much higher concentration than toothpaste or water. The fluoride is applied as a gel, foam, or varnish and works through remineralization — strengthening areas of enamel weakened by acids.
What to Expect
Treatment is quick and non-invasive for most patients. Avoid eating or drinking for 30 minutes afterward to allow full absorption into the enamel.
Who Benefits Most?
Children and teenagers (especially during tooth development)
Adults with high cavity risk or dry mouth
Patients with receding gums or exposed root surfaces
Those undergoing orthodontic treatment
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes — professional fluoride varnish is significantly more concentrated (about 22,600 ppm) than regular toothpaste (typically 1,000–1,500 ppm in the US) and stays on teeth longer. It's especially helpful for children and adults at elevated cavity risk. Dr. Maddipati decides whether professional fluoride is clinically appropriate for you based on your individual cavity history — it's not recommended for every patient.
Yes, Medicaid and CHIP cover fluoride treatments for children. Most PPO plans cover them 100% too. We'll verify your benefits before treatment and let you know any costs upfront.
The application is completely comfortable — no drills, no needles, no discomfort. Dr. Maddipati paints a thin layer of fluoride varnish (or applies a gel or foam) onto the cleaned tooth surfaces using a small brush. The varnish sets in seconds. The only post-visit guidance is to wait about 30 minutes before eating or drinking so the fluoride can fully absorb into the enamel. Soft foods are fine after that. Dr. Maddipati gives you specific instructions at your visit.
Usually every 6 months with regular cleanings, but Dr. Maddipati might recommend every 3 months if your child gets cavities frequently or has braces. We space appointments to work with your schedule.
Many parents ask about fluoride safety — this is a completely reasonable question, and Dr. Maddipati welcomes it. Here is what the current evidence shows:
Professional fluoride varnish applied in a dental office contains a carefully measured, safe amount of fluoride. It is applied topically — to the surface of the teeth — not swallowed. The ADA, CDC, American Academy of Pediatrics, and American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry all endorse professional fluoride varnish as safe and effective for children and adults at elevated cavity risk.
Research shows fluoride varnish reduces cavity rates by approximately 37% in baby teeth and 43% in permanent teeth compared to no treatment — making it one of the most evidence-supported preventive tools in dentistry.
If you have specific concerns about fluoride for your child or for yourself, Dr. Maddipati is happy to discuss them before any treatment begins. No fluoride treatment is applied without your knowledge and agreement.
Different Forms of Fluoride — What We Use
At Mi Smile, we primarily use 2.26% sodium fluoride varnish — the form recommended by the ADA for patients of all ages, including children under 6. It is applied quickly at the end of your cleaning appointment, takes 1–4 minutes, and has a mild flavor. A simple instruction: avoid eating or drinking for 30 minutes after application to allow full absorption.
